The Board of Education of the Grant Public Schools met in regular session on Monday, November 12, 2007 with President, Dave Robinson presiding.

President, Dave Robinson, called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:00 p.m.  

 

 

Motion by Paul Roberts, supported by Kris Lesley, to approve the agenda as presented.

Middle School counselors Theresa Fetterley and Kristin Keelean made a presentation to the board on bullying.

Scott Bogner, Superintendent, reported that a canine team came to both the high school and middle school to search for illegal substances.  None were found and a strong message was sent regarding our stance against drugs.  The band competed at the state finals and finished 10th in the state.  The cross country team sent two athletes to the state finals.  Ike VanDoorne received All-State Honors and Courtney Jensen received Academic All-State honors.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT


 

Jan Lesley, Finance Director, went over the 2006-07 Financial Statements and Independent Auditor’s Report.

FINANCIAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT

 

 

Tom Szocinski, High School Principal, reported that the National Honor Society induction was held on Monday.  He informed the board of upcoming musical concerts and that the FFA citrus sale is in progress.

PRINCIPAL

REPORTS

 

 

Lance Jones, Middle School Principal, reported that the MEAP tests were completed on October 29th.  He invited the board to see the Middle School play “A Thousand Cranes” which will be held at the FAC.  Parent/Teacher conferences  are coming upon November 13 & 14.

 

 

 

Joel Schuitema, Elementary School Principal, reported the students went on their “Big Event” last week.  The students went to the FAC today to see “A Thousand Cranes.” 

 

 

 

Renae Galsterer, Primary Center Principal, reported that Mrs. Flauaus’ annual Children’s Yard Sale is coming up on December 4th & 5th.  Fit for the Future, a Gerber Hospital/NCRESA initiative to help children and families develop a healthy lifestyle, will be visiting the students this month.  New NCA surveys are being handed out at the parent/teacher conferences.

 

 

 

John Klever, Learning Center Director, reported that all of his students have taken the PLAN test, which will provide his staff with baseline data.  By comparing this data with nationwide data, we can emphasize areas of instruction that will enable our students to plug any holes in their learning.  Mr. Klever commended Mr. Allen, math/science teacher, for the fantastic job he is doing bringing complicated math concepts to the students at the Learning Center.

 

 

 

Linda Dixon in our Transportation Department has turned in her resignation to accept their Transportation Supervisor position.  Motion by Jim Stuart, supported by Jon Chase.

At the November 5th workshop, the board interviewed two individuals for the open position on the Grant Area District Library Board.  Motion by Kris Lesley, supported by Jill Niewiadomski, to appoint Scott Jensen to another term on the district library board.

GRANT AREA DISTRICT LIBRARY BOARD APPOINTMENT

Last month the board considered the bylaws and policies of our student organizations as a first reading.  Motion by Bob Jenema, supported by Jim Stuart, to approve the bylaws and policies of our student organizations for the 2007/08 school year.

Linda Paton, a third grade teacher, has submitted a request for an elective leave for the remainder of the 2007/08 school year.  Motion by Paul Roberts, supported by Kris Lesley, to deny the request for elective leave.

Motion Approved 7-0

 

 

 

The board discussed the upcoming calendar.  The December 10th meeting will be held at the High School Media Center at 5:30 PM.

President Dave Robinson entertained a motion to enter into closed session so that the board can discuss negotiations.  Motion by Bob Jenema, supported by Jill Niewiadomski.

There being no further business before the Board, President Dave Robinson entertained a motion for adjournment.  Motion by Paul Roberts supported by Jill Niewiadomski.  President Robinson declared the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
